When Kyle first joined Caledonia Group through a local youth community service program, he was eager to learn but unsure of what to expect. Fast forward to today, and he’s become one of our most committed and promising trainees – a true example of what opportunity, mentorship, and hard work can achieve.
Kyle approached Caledonia with the support of a local not-for-profit youth community service group, Ruah. He worked with representatives from Ruah that provided him with advice and encouraged him to take active steps towards applying for a position that sparked excitement and hope in him.
Kyle’s Inspiring Trainee Success Story: A Journey from Opportunity to Impact
When Caledonia’s Traineeship Coordinator, Tanja, first met Kyle, she was hooked. Coming into the interview, Kyle brought warmth, a willingness to learn, and a humility that opened her eyes to the opportunity that he was presenting to her. It was clear to Tanja within minutes of meeting Kyle that he had just as much to teach the team as they had to teach him.
“We had actually finished our intake and weren’t bringing on anymore trainees,” Tanja says.
“But we absolutely fell in love with Kyle and gave him a position immediately!”
How Mentorship Shaped Kyle’s Trainee Success Story at Caledonia

Kyle says, “It’s good to get an opportunity like this to learn a lot and I’m very grateful and excited for the future.”

Kyle’s Impact on the Team
The impact that Kyle has made in our yard is profound. He has a brightness around him that only encourages and uplifts everyone around him, and that has become apparent through the various friendships and relationships that he has created in his time with us.
Tanja says that she appreciates the “hope that people like Kyle give me”.
“His ability to work through adversity is a valuable asset that has taught me the incredible resilience of humankind.”
Advice for Aspiring Trainees: Passion Over Experience
When asked what she would say to someone else looking for a chance like this, Tanja said the following:
“I would say that a genuine passion is the most noticeable asset a person can have. That passion can outweigh experience in a lot of circumstances. Have a passion for what you want. I look for someone who exudes a degree of enthusiasm and drive.”
“I feel blessed to have had this opportunity and I’m eager to keep working with the community and various community-based programs, to reach these kids and give them an opportunity for a future they may not have had before us!”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Caledonia’s Traineeship Program
Tanja has always remained committed to enhancing Caledonia’s traineeship and apprenticeship program, and after meeting and working with Kyle, is excited to collaborate more with services that provide opportunities to those who face disadvantages.
“I look forward to finding many more ‘Kyle’s,’” she says.

Kyle is an incredible addition to our team, and we look forward to filling our team with people that share the same values: caring, optimistic, and open-minded.
The Positive Change in Kyle’s Life
But most importantly of all, is the positive turn that Kyle confirms his life has taken after beginning his traineeship with Caledonia.
“Getting an opportunity to further myself in scaffolding really lifted a lot of my stress,” Kyle told us.
“I have a more positive outlook on life, I bought a car, and I’m feeling more successful.”
